Dental Crowns and Bridges

Crowns and bridges are popular types of dental restorations. They belong to the family of fixed prosthetic restorations, and are cemented onto implants or teeth. A crowns is a “cap” that covers teeth that are severely sensitive, cracked, broken, discolored, have large fillings, or have had a root canal. They reproduce the shape of natural teeth, strengthen and protect them from future decay.

A dental bridge is a good way to quickly replace one and more missing teeth without wearing dentures or undergoing surgery. The new tooth is held in place by two crowns.  The best features of fixed dental bridges are that they are cemented in place (so they do not come out) and they look very natural.

Key Points When Getting Dental Crowns and Bridges

Getting dental crowns and bridges usually involve two visits to the dental office. The porcelain material that crowns and bridges are made out of are both stain and bleach resistant.  For this reason, we recommend that, if you are interested in whitening your teeth, you whiten first. Then, we prepare the teeth and take impressions.  During this procedure, the tooth is anesthetized to ensure there is no pain.  Finally, a temporary crown or bridge is put in place to protect your prepared teeth while the permanent one is being made. On the last visit, Dr. Holmes will cement the permanent crown or bridge.

The cost of teeth restoration using crowns and bridges depends on material, and the material depends on the location of the tooth, the function of the tooth, the condition of the gum tissue, the amount of tooth that shows when you smile, the color or shade of the tooth, and your personal preference.

Dr. Holmes will discuss this in detail and will help you select the material that is right for you.
