Before whitening, we recommend undergoing a thorough cleaning, checking your teeth for any decay and addressing all problem areas. Because restorative materials (i.e., dental crowns, veneers, bridges) respond differently to bleaching, we conduct a thorough examination to determine the best whitening approach for you. We will also address any sensitivity issues prior to your procedure. If these issues are not addressed, some patients do experience increased sensitivity to cold items during treatment.
How Long Will It Last?
One of the most common questions we get regarding whitening is “How long will it last?” The answer to this varies from patient. For example, someone who drinks lots of coffee and red wine will tend to see their teeth ‘rebound’ and stain faster than someone who only drinks water. However, with some minor maintenance and minimal expense, even the biggest coffee drinkers can keep their white smile for a lifetime.
What Is Involved in the Whitening Process?
Dr. Holmes has tried most of the professional whitening systems out there today. You may have heard of some of these systems and the catchy terms they incorporate into their marketing. It is hard to pick up an ad for teeth whitening that does not include exciting terms like “LASER” or “ONE HOUR WHITENING.” Dr. Holmes has tried these, and what we have found is that these systems tend to be very expensive and do not produce long-lasting results.
So, what does Dr. Holmes recommend? In our office, we use the gold standard take-home whitening protocol with the two best brands of bleach available today; Opalescence and Kor. With both of these systems, we first take impressions of your teeth. Then, we fabricate custom bleaching trays specifically for you. Within one week, we have you back into the office. During this visit, we will go over in depth instructions of exactly how you will bleach your teeth at home over the course of 2 weeks. One great thing about this protocol is that once you are done with your bleaching you can keep your custom bleaching trays. If you ever want to touch up your teeth for any reason (before a wedding or family pictures), just wear your trays a day or two before the event. You can touch up like this forever!
